South L.A. HEAC Market Makeover 2007: Coronado Market

The first year of the program produced Where Do I Get My Five?, a DVD which portrays five distinct stories about the challenges of healthy food access in South Los Angeles.


Student-written, shot + acted, these videos are more than simple documentaries; they are part of an integrated project resulting in direct community change

  • the makeover of a local corner store to carry more fresh produce
  • an on-going partnership with the local City Council
  • and highly visible student leaders

Given the number of food deserts across the country, there are people who are, quite literally, hungry for this information. The conversion of two additional markets, Los Compadres + El Azteca, each located across the street from The Accelerated School, serve as case studies that provide comprehensive guidelines for “greening” local corner stores and understanding the food desert.
