HEALTHY CORNER STORES NETWORK

Led by the Community Food Security Coalition, The Food Trust, Public Health Law & Policy, and Urbane Development, the Healthy Corner Stores Network promotes efforts to bring healthier foods into corner stores in low-income and underserved communities. THE FOOD ENVIRONMENT ATLAS

Created by the USDA's Economic Research Service, the Food Environment Atlas assembles statistics on food environment indicators to stimulate research on determinants of food choices and diet quality and provides a spatial overview of a community's ability to access healthy food and its success in doing so. It assembles statistics on three broad categories of food environment factors: Food Choices, Health + Well-Being, Community Characteristics. Users can 1) Create maps such as obesity prevalence across the US or access to grocery stores across US counties; 2) View all County-level indicators for a selected county; 3) Use the advanced query tool to identify counties with both high poverty + obesity rates.

 

POLICYLINK: Healthy Food Retailing

This online tool focuses on increasing access to retail outlets that sell nutritious, affordable food in low-income communities of color. It includes multiple strategies for increasing access to healthy foods, including working with existing small, neighborhood stores.

TOWARD A SUSTAINABLE FOOD PLAN FOR OAKLAND

Identifies a number of activities that cities could be doing to support the conversion of corner store to outlets for fresh produce including incentives (tax breaks, low-interest loans, grants and assistance with site location), streamlining any license or permit process, providing technical assistance to shop owners, and ensuring police services to support stores and discourage undesirable loitering, among others.

NETWORK FOR A HEALTHY CALIFORNIA - RETAIL PROGRAM

The Network for a Healthy California - Retail Program facilitates partnerships between neighborhood stores and community health agencies to help increase the consumption and purchase of fruits and vegetables among food stamp eligible Californians. The Retail Program provides retailers statewide with a unique variety of tools, resources, and outreach activities to inspire healthy change among consumers. The Retail Program also provides retailers opportunities to increase fruit and vegetable sales, therefore improving the bottom line.
